Driver accidentally hits man with car, victim later dies from injuries

When they arrived, they found a man unresponsive suffering from trauma. The victim has since been identified as 34-year-old Samuel Thornton.

WASHINGTON — Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating an accident that killed a man in Northeast, D.C.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to an alley in the 1100 block of 5th Street Northeast just after 10 p.m. on Friday for calls of an unresponsive person.

When they arrived, they found a man unresponsive suffering from trauma. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has since been identified as 34-year-old Samuel Thornton.

Officials conducted a preliminary investigation and learned that Thornton fell on the ground while he was walking in the alley. A short time later, when a car entered the alley, the driver didn’t see him on the ground, and accidentally hit Thornton with the car.

The driver stayed at the scene and called police.

The Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries and ruled his death an accident.

The investigation is still ongoing, anyone with information should call police at 202-727-9099.
