WASHINGTON β A large group of protestors have gathered in order to block road access to the United States Capitol ahead of President Joe Biden's State of the Union.
Biden is expected to address the nation at 9 p.m. The crowd began to gather around 7:30 p.m. near the E. Barrett Prettyman United States Courthouse on Constitution Avenue.
The group of people blocking the roadway is calling for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the genocide in Gaza. Additionally, protestors say they are demanding an end to U.S. military funding to Israel, and investment in life-affirming community needs like housing, health care, education, and climate care.
In February, a similar demonstration impacted morning commutes across the DMV as hundreds of protesters rallied at Union Station and blocked five major roadways. More than 20 people were arrested by multiple law enforcement agencies.
