WASHINGTON — Police have identified the homicide victim who was found inside a trash can in Southwest D.C. just days after the new year

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 1400 block of Canal Street after someone reported finding human remains inside a trash can shortly before 9:30 a.m. on January 3.

The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to conduct an autopsy. On Thursday, police identified the victim as 42-year-old Harry Keels, of Southwest, D.C.

An autopsy found Keel was shot to death and his death has been ruled a homicide, the second reported homicide of the year.

No suspect information has been released at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.
