Homicide investigation underway after human remains were found in trash can near Nats Park

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating after human remains were found in a trash can near Nats Park Wednesday morning.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 1400 block of Canal Street, Southwest after someone reported finding human remains inside a trash can shortly before 9:30 a.m. 

The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to conduct an autopsy. While it is unclear how the victim was killed, officials have ruled their death a homicide. 

The person killed has not been identified at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
