DC finished June with a heatwave lasting 6 days. High temps from Tuesday, June 25th through Sunday, June 30th were at or above 90 degrees.
This was DC's longest June heatwave since 2015, when DC also had 6 days in a row of highs in the 90s.
Heat Wave History
In comparison to all summer heat waves for DC, 6 days is nothing near record-setting. A heat wave of 10 days would be D.C.'s longest since the summer of 2016. July and August 2016 were both very hot months in the nation's capital and featured two memorable heat waves of 12 and 13 days, respectively.
Washingtonians experienced four days of triple-digit heat during the summer of 2016 -- the last time 100 degree heat occurred.
Heat Safety
While no triple-digit heat is expected during the current heat wave, the combination of temperatures in the 90s and increasing relative humidity will make it dangerously hot. It’s best to do any outdoor activities early in the day because the morning is the coolest part of the day with the best air quality.
It’s also important to drink lots of water and spend as much time as possible in an air-conditioned environment. If you must spend time outdoors, don’t forget to wear sunscreen lotion. Your pets also need plenty of water as well. Never leave your children or your pets in a parked car.
