Passenger on scooter dies after crash

While merging off of the 14th Street Bridge, the driver lost control along the right curve of the roadway and ended up on the median.

WASHINGTON — D.C. Police is investigating the death of a man involved in a motorized vehicle crash.

The Major Crash Investigations Unit is looking into the death of Takoma Park resident, 55-year-old Francisco Eduardo Santaella. On Wednesday, January 10, Santaella was traveling on the back of a motorized scooter along the 14th Street Bridge at 6:30 p.m.

The scooter was traveling northbound in the left lane to take Exit 1. While merging off of the 14th Street Bridge, the driver lost control along the right curve of the roadway and ended up on the median that separates 14th Street and the main lanes for I-395.

Both riders were thrown from the scooter and taken to an area hospital for their injuries. The driver sustained minor injuries. Santaella’s injuries were much more severe, and he died on Tuesday.

Police have not released the identity or current condition of the scooter driver.
