WASHINGTON — A day after an officer was wounded and a suspect killed in a shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced an Internal Affairs investigation into what happened that day.
The deadly shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of M Street, Northwest D.C.
The United States Police Police said an officer contacted a suspect for an alleged narcotics violation when the suspect ran. A short time later, both the suspect and the officer shot at each other. Both were wounded and taken to area hospitals.
The suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Turell Delonte Campbell, died at the hospital.
The officer, who has not been identified, remains at the hospital, recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.
In a press conference Wednesday, officials said body cam footage of the shooting will be released by the police department within 30 days.
MPD announced on Thanksgiving, one day after the shooting, that an internal affairs investigation had been launched and shared an image of what police say was Campbell's gun that was found at the scene. The facts and evidence will then be independently reviewed by the United States Attorney's Office.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.
Police held a news conference Wednesday evening to announce the latest in their investigation.
