A U.S. Park Police officer is in the hospital and a suspect is dead after a shooting Wednesday in Northwest D.C., on the south end of Logan Circle.
Police held a news conference Wednesday evening to announce the latest in their investigation.
At 2:30 p.m., officers in the area of 12th Street and Massachusetts Avenue attempted to stop someone for a drug violation.
Just 15 minutes later, investigators say a U.S. Park Police Officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect in the area of 12th and M Streets, Northwest. Both the officer and suspect were shot during the encounter and taken to area hospitals for treatment. The suspect was pronounced dead at hospital, and the officer is still recovering. Detectives say the officer was shot multiple times in the torso area and legs.
The Metropolitan Police Department is now taking over the investigation. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed in paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
Officers recovered the suspect's gun at the scene of the shooting. Body cam footage of the shooting will be released by the police department within 30 days.
