DC’S Eastern Market celebrates 150 years

A staple of DC weekends is marking a huge milestone. The District has a full weekend of activities planned to mark the occasion.

WASHINGTON — DC's Capitol Hill neighborhood is celebrating 150 years of Eastern Market this weekend.

Many probably know it for its farm fresh produce and local arts and crafts, but it's also a National Historic Landmark.

It was designated as such in 1971,

According to the city, it's DC's only historic public market building that is still operating as a public market.

To mark the occasion, there will be a two-part celebration.

Friday night is Novemberfest, which is a ticketed fundraiser for the market.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the market will host live music from the Rock Creek Kings, a limited edition beer from Atlas Brew Works, and a variety of food from local restaurants.

Organizers said online tickets are sold out for the event, but they will offer a few tickets at the door.

Anniversary Weekend activities go from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Because the market was built during the Victorian era, many of the activities follow that theme.

There will be Victorian floral arranging, walking tours, and historic interpreters of the market's architect, Adolf Cluss, and other related figures.

There will also be a demonstration of the large one-wheel penny-farthing bikes.

For more modern-day activities, the market is hosting a scavenger hunt for kids both days and will have giant games like Jenga set up.
