Community devastated after violent weekend in DC leaves teen dead

Community members said they would like to see more funding for police officers.

WASHINGTON — It was another violent week in the District.

On Friday night, an 18-year-old man was killed and two others injured on 16th and W Street, Southeast in Historic Anacostia.

On Saturday, a 38-year-old man was shot and killed in the 700 block of Atlantic Street, that’s in the Washington Highlands section of Southeast.

Two hours later, a 15-year-old teen was shot and killed in the 600 block of 18th Street, Northeast right behind the Rosedale Recreation Center.

Sondra Gilbert, a 30 year resident of  Rosedale is calling on leaders for help.

“I’m devastated because we’ve lost a child. Our community doesn’t have the support it needs. People ask you to vote for them. When we give our vote, we need to see something done about it.” Sondra Gilbert said.

Pastor Tony Herndon, with Grace Nation Ministry works with families across the DMV, who have been impacted by gun violence. He offers counseling, mentoring, food, and most recently, works in the D.C. juvenile detention center.

“We’re going inside to hear about what they’re going through so we can bring that into fruition because, we are making all the decisions for them without really knowing the problem.” District Elder Pastor Tony Herndon, Jr. said.

This service helps teens re-enter society with a plan and a support system families trust.

“We go into the areas where there is conflict and help young people come out from there so they can re-enter and give them a purpose to live for.” Pastor Herndon said.

Community members said they’d like to see more funding for additional officers in the community. Gilbert is hopeful the upcoming election will bring change.

“I’m heartbroken. I can't imagine those parents losing a life. With this new election we will see who cares about us.” Gilbert said.
