WASHINGTON — D.C. Police are asking for the community’s help in finding the person who stole a car with an infant inside.
Officers responded to the 3000 block of M Street in Northwest just after 6 p.m. for reports of child abduction. Police say the 4-month-old was in the backseat of a White Jeep SUV when it was stolen.
An hour had gone by and police were preparing to issue an Amber Alert when they got the call that the baby had been located safely.
Police said the car thief removed the car seat the infant was in and left her on a stranger's porch along the 2700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast.
The owner of the home told police they heard a knock on their door, and when they opened it they saw the baby girl. They immediately flagged down an officer who was patrolling the area.
Police said the baby was not injured and was quickly reunited with her mother.
During a press conference when police were asked about the events leading up to the child's abduction, Assistant Chief of Patrol Services North Darnell Robinson said it is still under investigation, but they are not definitively calling the crime a carjacking, adding that often during the winter people leave their cars on and unattended while it warms up.
When asked if the District was putting a plan into place to help decrease the number of carjackings and car thefts, Assistant Chief Robinson said they have been giving residents advice on how to avoid becoming victims of these crimes. But an official plan to stop it from happening has not been issued by police.
The White Jeep that was stolen has not been recovered.
No suspect description has been released at this time.
