Man pulled out of the water after his car went into the Anacostia River Christmas Day identified

The man was pulled out of his car with life-threatening injuries. Divers searched the area for additional victims, but found none.

WASHINGTON — A man is in a hospital after first responders pulled him from his car that plummeted to the bottom of the Anacostia River on Christmas Day. 

The car went into the water near the 11th Street bridge in Southeast. First responders and divers arrived at the scene just before 2 p.m.

D.C. Fire and EMS dispatched three rescue divers and two rescue swimmers into the Anacostia River to fish the man out. 

The man suffered life-threatening injuries while under water. After being rescue from the water, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The man was identified as 38-year-old Michael Jerome Dennis, of Southeast, D.C. Investigators still don't know why Dennis's vehicle went over the embankment into the water.

Divers continued searching the area for additional victims, but did not find any.

The rescue team was out of the water by 2:30 p.m. and are now receiving rehab following decontamination.

No word on the identity of the victim or what caused his car to go over the bridge.
