Man dead after being pulled from Potomac River

After the man was located in the river, divers returned to the water to confirm that there were no additional victims.

WASHINGTON — A man has died after his car went into the Potomac River in Southwest D.C. overnight.

Officers with the United States Park Police responded to Ohio Drive Southwest, in the area of the Memorial Bridge, after a report of a submerged car in the area. In addition, divers with the Metropolitan Police Department responded to help DC Fire and EMS remove the victim and his car. 

Upon arrival, authorities found the car in the water beneath the bridge. The man, who was inside the vehicle at the time, was removed. He was in critical, life-threatening condition when found, and was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. Officials confirmed to WUSA9 that the man has since been pronounced dead. 


After the man was located in the river, divers returned to the water to confirm that there were no additional victims. Firefighters also checked the shoreline. No other victims were found in the area.

The vehicle, that police say went into the river around midnight, has also been removed from the water. It is unknown at this time how the car ended up in the water. No information has been released about the victim at this time, including his name, age or where he is from.
