Large fire in DC at former firehouse under renovation

No injuries have been reported at this time.

WASHINGTON — A large fire at an old firehouse in Northwest, D.C. had smoke billowing into the sky Friday night.

According to information posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, by DC Fire and EMS, the fire was reported in the 1600 block of North Capitol Street in Northwest, D.C.

Fire could be seen through the roof of the three-story firehouse, which has been under renovation.

At one point, a Mayday alert was issued for a firefighter in distress but that call was resolved a short time later with all members accounted for, according to DC Fire and EMS.

The building was evacuated and crews worked on extinguishing the flames.

In an update, officials added that adjacent buildings are severely threatened and that an adjacent 4-story building that is part of a new complex attached to the firehouse is also well-involved.

Those threatened homes and buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m., DC Fire and EMS said 25 units and 125 personnel responded to the scene. Crews began working on hitting pockets of fire after the most visible flames were knocked down.

No injuries or displacements were reported. DC Fire posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the fire was "under control" early Saturday morning. DC Fire and EMS are continuing to monitor the scene.

Roads are now open to traffic in the surrounding area.

There is no word on what may have caused the fire.
