ARLINGTON, Va. — As the holiday season approaches, many are coming together to help a family who lost their home when a barricade situation between their neighbor and police ended with the duplex exploding.
Video of the December 4 explosion was shared all over the world, as more details were released about the suspect, James Yoo, who reportedly fired a flare gun more than 30 times from his house into the neighborhood in the 800 block of North Burlington Street.
The home Yoo barricaded himself in was a duplex, with the other unit being used by the Smith family.
Thankfully, the Smith family and their dog were evacuated by police before the explosion, however, they lost everything, according to a GoFundMe that is aiming to help the family.
As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, the GoFundMe has raised more than $101,000 in less than 12 hours. By Thursday afternoon, it had raised nearly $170,000.
People left comments for the Smiths in a show of support.
"The community stands behind you all and we are here to help. May you all find peace in this terrible situation that your family is safe and you have all our support to lean on while you slowly find your path forward," said one commenter who pledged $100. "All our thoughts are with you."
"Glad you all are safe. Stuff can be replaced and I hope this helps. Lives can’t," said another commenter who donated $50. "Glad to help especially in the holiday season."
