5 displaced by Northwest DC fire

Investigators are still working to determine how the fire started.

WASHINGTON — DC Fire and EMS crews are working to learn how a fire started at a grocery store and restaurant in Northwest D.C. Monday morning. Five people living above the store were displaced by the blaze, firefighters said.

Firefighters were first dispatched to the 7600 block of Georgia Avenue Northwest just before 4 a.m. Once on the scene, they found flames and smoke coming from the Melat Grocery Store and Restaurant. The two-story building has apartments on the second floor.

Crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported, but four adults and one child are now without a place to live. The Red Cross has been notified to help.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Additional details were not immediately available.
