'She's going to listen to her mother' | Prosecutors say mom accused of shooting daughter left voicemail trying to influence her testimony

The State’s Attorney’s Office says their immediate concern is making sure Talecka Brown can’t stop her daughter from telling the truth.

SEAT PLEASANT, Md. — A 32-year-old mother was brought in front of a Prince George’s County judge Wednesday, after she was accused of shooting her teen daughter during an argument. She is facing several charges, including first-degree attempted murder.

Police arrived at Talecka Brown’s residence on 69th Place in Seat Pleasant just before 5 p.m. Monday afternoon, and found her 13-year-old daughter near the front door with a gunshot wound to her neck.

Court documents say initially, the teen girl told police that an intruder shot her when she got home from school, but audio from 911 dispatch shows her story didn’t match with what Brown told police.

Once the girl was taken to the hospital, she told investigators that her mother told her to lie about what happened, and confessed that after their altercation, she saw her mother holding a gun. Investigators concluded that Brown pulled the trigger.

“While no one thinks a mother would shoot their very own daughter, no one can conceive of that, these incidents do happen,” said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy.

Brown now faces a variety of charges, including the attempted murder charge, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

In court, the prosecution revealed that Brown left the teen’s father a voicemail Wednesday morning, trying to influence their daughter. According to the victim’s father, during that voicemail, not once did Brown ask how her daughter is doing.

The judge decided that Brown would be held without bond to keep Brown away from her daughter.

“It’s her mother, she’s going listen to her mother,” says Assistant State’s Attorney Ashley Sowls. “We don’t want her to be tainted in any way by the pressure.”

Brown hasn’t entered a plea yet, but she’s due back in court on Oct. 25.
