SEAT PLEASANT, Md. — Police in Seat Pleasant say a mom shot her 13-year-old daughter inside of their home on Monday evening. The girl remains in critical condition Tuesday, and 32-year-old Talecka Brown, has been arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder.
Officers responded to the 500 block of 69th Place in Seat Pleasant just before 5 p.m. for a reported shooting. When police arrived, they found the teenager near the front door with a gunshot wound to her neck. She was immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition, where she currently has a chest tube assisting her.
Officers with the Prince George's County Gun Crimes Unit began investigating what happened. They reviewed surveillance video showing the moments before and after the shooting.
According to court documents, the teen came home, grabbed the trashcan from the curb, placed it on the side of the house and then went it inside. The teen told police, once inside she and her mother, Brown, got into an argument that turned physical.
During the altercation, the teen said she noticed Brown was holding a gun. The teen then proceeded to walk away towards the stairs, before hearing a single gunshot. She said she remembers falling down the stairs and not being able to move.
Her mother told her to tell police that she was shot by an intruder in the house. When officers reviewed the surveillance cameras in the neighborhood, they reported that no one was seen walking in or out of the front or back door of the house between the time the teen came home and when the 911 call went out.
A gun and shell casing were recovered from the home.
When officers interviewed Brown she admitted that she and her daughter were the only ones inside of the home at the time of the shooting.
Brown is currently being held at the Department of Corrections.
"I have to commend my officers for their rapid response and decisive actions at the scene. It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but it is heart wrenching when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector," said Acting Seat Pleasant Police Chief Cedric Heyward. "I am glad to hear that the victim is recovering at a local hospital, but the emotional trauma will remain for some time. The Seat Pleasant Police Department is committed to working with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Prince George’s County Police to ensure we hold Ms. Brown accountable for her actions."
