LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A former worker at Chopticon High School, who was convicted last year of sexually abusing a student, will spend more than a decade behind bars. Davon Natrell Stewart, 23, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison. He has also been placed on the sex offender registry for life.
Stewart was employed by St. Mary’s County Public Schools as a safety and security assistant at Chopticon High School when he was accused of abusing a minor who was enrolled at the school.
According to a job listing by St. Mary's County Public Schools, a safety and security assistant "provides a proactive means of meeting the safety and security of the students, staff and the community within the school."
“The Defendant abused his position of trust by using his authority to commit a sex offense on a child who was a student in the school he was supposed to serve and protect,” State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling said. “The exploitation of his position is deplorable — especially in a school, a place where children should always feel safe to grow and learn.”
Maryland sentencing guidelines call for a sentence of between five and 10 years in prison, but the state requested the court go above the guideline range.
