Fans take to social media to review newly named Northwest Stadium

Some fans believe the new name adds to confusion on what place the team represents.
WUSA9 has learned there is growing concern in Maryland about what would happen if the team left its current home in Prince Georges County behind.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders announced its new naming rights deal with Northwest Federal Credit Union for the team's home field in Landover, Maryland on Tuesday morning. The field will now be known as Northwest Stadium.

The new name and partnership with the credit union is a big talker for Commanders fans. Some are taking to social media to express their opinions on the new name.

One of the most-commented-on topics is if the new name will add confusion to the misconception that the Commanders play in Washington state — which happens to be the most northwestern state in the country — instead of Washington, D.C,

“What a roundabout way to announce that we're moving to the other Washington,” one commenter wrote on Reddit.

“>called the washington commanders >stadium named northwest stadium >play in maryland,” another commenter posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

But some people find the confusion funny.

“I think Northwest Stadium sounds pretty cool but everyone remember this because ‘Which NFL team plays in Northwest Stadium?’ is sure to start appearing at your local trivia nights,” another commenter wrote on Reddit.

Northwest Federal Credit Union was founded in the Northwest quadrant of D.C. in 1947, giving the credit union its name. Now, its headquarters are in northern Virginia.

“All jokes aside from the fact that we play in the mid Atlantic and stuff, this business is local to the NOVA-DC- SoMD area. My take is that making in-roads with big local businesses and tying into the community is one way the ownership group tries to make inroads with the local community. That includes businesses too,” another commenter wrote on Reddit.

Despite the jokes, people seem to like the name — or at the very least, they don’t mind it.
