LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — The Loudoun County school system is no longer considering a delayed start for students to allow teachers to have more time to complete professional development trainings. The decision came after they received feedback.
The school district says it will not move ahead with a controversial plan to delay school start times for more than a dozen school days. The plan would have added 16 delayed start times to the calendar for next school year.
They say after hearing a lot of negative feedback from families, school board member Lauren Shernoff says the plan is being thrown out and more options will be explored. She wrote on Facebook, "I hope you feel heard, and know that the division, in partnership with the board, is changing course because of your voices."
She added that she hoped this response will build back trust and show they are transparent and accountable for their actions.
Here's Shernoff's full Facebook post:
I want to thank everyone who reached out and gave feedback and offered suggestions for other possible solutions. I quickly realized that we need to continue to explore other options, and that is what we are doing. Your feedback illuminated things I had not considered and it helped to change my original thinking. I want you to know that. When we know better, we can do better. So feedback will be analyzed and more options will be explored. I hope you feel heard, and know that the division, in partnership with the board, is changing course because of your voices-maybe in some way, this response will help build back trust by showing we are transparent and accountable for our actions.
