SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — An elementary school teacher, suspected to be under the influence, has been charged after police say drugs were found in her Virginia classroom on Thursday.

The second-grade teacher has been identified as Candyce Leigh Carter, 35, of Spotsylvania. She was arrested for felony possession of a schedule I/II narcotics, felony child endangerment, and felony child neglect or abuse. She is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail at this time.

On Thursday, May 16, the School Resource Officer at Spotswood Elementary School noticed Carter and said she appeared to be under the influence. Investigators claim they later found narcotics in her classroom. Additionally, the teacher's husband, 34-year-old Kristopher Donald Carter, was reportedly found in the parking lot in a car under the influence as well, and required medical help. Police say a 2-year-old child was also located inside the car.

Kristopher Carte was arrested for felony child endangerment and felony child neglect or abuse. He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under a $5,000 bond.

No students were injured or exposed to the drugs but were checked out by a medical professional out of an abundance of caution.
