Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle that fled the scene in Fairfax County

HYBLA VALLEY, Va. — A pedestrian is dead after a hit-and-run crash Thursday morning in Virginia.

Fairfax County Police responded to a deadly crash at 6:26 a.m. at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Woodlawn Trail in Hybla Valley. When they arrived, they found a man who had been struck by a vehicle. The man, later identified as 57-year-old James Matthew Martin, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver who hit the man fled in the vehicle.

Martin was crossing Richmond Highway from east to west when he was struck by a Toyota Camry, investigators said. Investigators identified the driver of the Camry on Friday but have not yet released any information about their identify. They have not said whether the driver is facing any charges yet. 

Detectives from FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit are still investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash and determining potential charges. Southbound Richmond Highway was closed at Belvoir Drive, but has since reopened. 

The area of Richmond Highway and Woodlawn Trail is both commercial and residential. On Richmond Highway, there is a McDonald’s, a frozen yogurt store, a gas station, a Pizza Hut and a laundromat, among other places. Further into Woodlawn Trail, the area is residential.
