Police: Teen shot in downtown Silver Spring 'not a random event'

Montgomery County Police said the teenager has been taken to a local hospital after being shot Sunday evening.

WASHINGTON — A teen was shot in downtown Silver Spring Sunday evening in what appears to be a 'not random event,' Montgomery County Police said.

Authorities responded near the intersection of Fenton Street and Ellsworth Road around 5:51 p.m. after receiving multiple calls of a possible shooting. One male victim was found shot in the abdomen, and responders took him to Washington Hospital Center where he remains in stable and non-life-threatening conditions.

An adult woman in her third trimester was also taken to a local hospital for a check-up after she became distressed at the sound of the shooting, police said. The woman was not shot and did not go into labor.

People who were near the incident said they heard gunshots just under 6 p.m., and began running away from the sound.

Montgomery County Police have not yet released any further information on a potential suspect or a motive for the crime, but have said that the crime does not appear to be random and there is an ongoing investigation.

They encourage anyone who might have more information on the shooting or the suspect to contact their Crime Stoppers Division with a tip at 1-866-411-8477.
