ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A police chase ended with a trail of destruction and a car bursting into flames late Monday night.
Virginia State Police began to chase a Hyundai Elantra after it refused to stop for Alexandria Police at around 11:19 p.m. Monday. Alexandria Police suspected the car had been stolen out of Maryland.
The suspect car damaged multiple cars and more during the chase.
First, it rammed into a state trooper vehicle, which then crashed into a power pole along the side of the road. The crash brought power line wires down onto the street.
At the intersection of Route 1 and Fort Hunt Road, the Elantra ran a red light before crashing into both a Chevy Silverado Electric Pickup Truck and a Toyota Corolla and finally stopping.
As it stopped, the car burst into flames, police say.
VSP troopers and a Fairfax Police officer were able to pull suspects from the car and provide first aid. One person in the car was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, and ambulances brought others in the car to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado also went to a nearby hospital for minor injuries, while the people inside the Toyota Corolla were not injured, police said.
Police have not said how many people were in the suspect car. They also have not said if the trooper that crashed into the power line was injured.
