WASHINGTON — A Metrobus collided with a sedan and fatally struck a pedestrian in D.C. Friday morning, police said.
The Metrobus was traveling southbound on Southern Avenue around 6 a.m. when it crashed into a sedan traveling in the same direction, WMATA officials said. An adult male was walking near the roadway and was struck by the bus, sustaining fatal injuries and later pronounced dead at the scene.
WMATA officials said the operator of the Metrobus has been taken to a local hospital to undergo standard testing and injury evaluations. It's not yet clear what caused the Metrobus to crash, and an investigation has been opened by D.C. Police.
Officials with WMATA said there are no crosswalks or traffic signals near the crash scene.
Other traffic and pedestrian fatalities have occurred throughout the DMV since the start of the year. On February 1, 29-year-old David Velasquez was struck and killed in Springfield, the third pedestrian fatality this year in Fairfax County.
Authorities said Velasquez was walking near the right lane of westbound Industrial Road in Springfield around 1 a.m. when he was struck by an SUV, police said. Officers said the SUV did not stop after hitting Velasquez and was last seen traveling north on Backlick Road.
Earlier in January, seven pedestrians were hit by cars in just two nights in Montgomery County.
