Woman caught on camera stealing package after following Amazon delivery driver

Neighbors say this bold porch pirate may be linked to other package thefts in the area.

WASHINGTON — A Northeast D.C. woman tells WUSA9 a woman stole her Amazon packages from her front door and believes she may be stealing packages in other neighborhoods nearby. Melissa shared a video showing a woman, in broad daylight, wearing slippers and a bonnet, attempting to enter her condo on 4th Street NE.

Melissa said she was on a trip in the UK as she watched in disbelief from her phone’s Ring camera app.

Melissa said the alleged thief first attempted to get in through the front door, then the back door. Melissa said the woman eventually returned to follow an Amazon delivery worker who was dropping off a package.

The woman can be seen waiting for the Amazon employee to open the door, then walks in, getting away with Melissa’s package — a 30-pound bag of dog food.

“She came around 3 in the afternoon. The delivery driver came first and she followed him up the stairs ... then I saw her go out the back.” Melissa said.

Melissa posted about the incident on a neighborhood watch app, hoping to warn others. She said someone recognized the same woman stealing packages in another neighborhood nearby.

“Someone said, 'Hey, this looks like the person who was following an Amazon truck on Illinois Ave.,'” Melissa said.

Melissa was shocked when the woman came back an hour later and left a surprise on her back porch: An empty box.

“I assume the guy just thought she lived in the building since she just helped herself in, but it would be good to build awareness for people whose profession is giving access to other people’s homes” Melissa said.

WUSA9 reached out to Amazon to see what the procedure is when it comes to delivery employees dropping off packages inside condo or apartment buildings.

We are waiting to hear back.
