DC man faces jail time after he was busted stealing a package off a front porch

Ernest Persha, 62, was indicted on enhanced second-degree theft charges.

WASHINGTON — A 62-year-old man is facing jail time after police busted him stealing a package off a front porch in Northeast D.C. Ernest Persha was indicted by a grand jury on one count of second-degree theft. 

According to the government's evidence, on Feb. 12, Persha took a package from the front porch of a house. He was immediately stopped and arrested by MPD officers who had been surveilling the property at the time.

Persha has prior theft convictions and was subject to enhanced penalties for his alleged theft, including a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in jail for each count of theft for which he is indicted. 

Persha arraignment is scheduled for March 5.
