Man pleads guilty to murder after shooting victim multiple times without warning on U Street

Police say 20-year-old David Botchway faces 16-20 years in prison.

WASHINGTON — A Maryland man has pleaded guilty to murder for shooting and killing 19-year-old Andre Baker of Washington, D.C. on U Street back in August.

A judge has scheduled a sentence hearing for 20-year-old David Botchway on March 8, 2024. He faces 16 to 20 years in prison for his alleged involvement in the deadly shooting.

On August 5, according to evidence, Baker and two friends were hanging out in front of a bus stop on U Street in Northwest, D.C. after a night out. At 5 a.m., Botchway walked up to the group, and without warning, pointed a gun at Baker and shot him multiple times in the head and chest. Baker was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police say one of the bullets also grazed one of the victim's friends.

Botchway ran away after the shooting. After a short chase, officers were able to apprehend him at the corner of 12th and T Streets and take him into custody. A .40 caliber Glock 22 handgun with an extended magazine was found on Bothway at the time of his arrest.

Police say the murder was also captured on surveillance cameras in the area.

On Wednesday, Botchway pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. There is no word on why Botchway opened fire that night.

The Metropolitan Police Department investigated this shooting. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nebiyu Feleke of the Homicide section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
