Judge sentences man who killed two Oakton High School students in crash to four years

OAKTON, Va. — A judge has officially sentenced the man who hit and killed two Oakton High School students in 2022.

Usman Shahid, who was 18 at the time, was traveling 81 miles in a 35-mph speed zone in June 2022, according to court testimony. He crashed into another vehicle making a left turn at the intersection, causing him to leave the road and hit three teenagers walking nearby who had just left school. One teenager survived, but teens Ada Martinez Nolasco and Leeyan Hanjia Yan were killed.

A jury found Shahid guilty on two counts of involuntary manslaughter and recommended a four-year sentence, despite prosecutors wanting a maximum of 10 years for each sentence.

On Friday, the judge agreed with that decision and added three years of post-release supervision.

Prosecutors say Shahid was driving more than double the speed limit when he hit a while they were walking home from school.

A new speed camera was just installed in that area a few months ago.
