VIENNA, Va. — Fairfax County officials are warning drivers that new speed cameras near Oakton High School have been installed, and within a month, fines will be levied against speeding drivers.
There will be a 30-day warning period, which began Monday, before fines will be enforced starting May 29.
The fines range from:
- $50 for citations 10-14 mph over limit
- $75 for citations 15-19 mph over limit
- $100 for citations 20 mph or more over limit
"The goal of the Speed Camera Pilot Program is to change the behavior of drivers and make our roads safer," program organizers say on their website. "Speed cameras will improve the safety of our roads by protecting pedestrians and slowing down motorists, especially around congested and vulnerable locations."
The beginning of the speed camera pilot program comes just days after a man was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of two Oakton High School students. Usman Shahid was convicted for killing Ada Martinez Nolasco and Leeyan Hanjia Yan, when he hit them with his car on June 7, 2022. Court testimony claimed that Shahid was driving 81 mph in a 35-mph zone, with passengers in his car when he hit the teens standing on a sidewalk. He was 18 at the time of the crash and had a learner's permit.
Speed cameras have also been installed near eight other Fairfax County schools.
