WASHINGTON — A Maryland man was sentenced to 23 years in prison on Friday for his involvement in a murder in Dupont Circle.
James Jackson, 30, of Silver Spring, was sentenced in the deadly shooting of Christian Monje, 29, of Fairfax County. He plead guilty in February to one count of second-degree murder while armed in connection to the shooting.
Investigators say on May 30, 2022, at 4:30 a.m., officers responded to Rhode Island Ave., NW, just outside of Dupont Circle, after hearing gunshots. Officers found Monje shot in the head on the steps of St. Matthew's Cathedral. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died a few weeks later.
Surveillance video from nearby cameras showed someone walking up to Monje while he sat on the steps of the church. Cameras also captured the same person running down a nearby alley and ducking behind a dumpster.
After searching the area, detectives found a ghost gun, that was later determined to be the murder weapon.
The case remained unsolved for several months. DNA evidence later helped identify Jackson as the suspect.
