DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. — A 22-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection to a deadly shooting at a car meetup in District Heights over the weekend. Homicide detectives arrested Raheem Adams of Stafford, Virginia. He has been charged with murder, attempted murder and other related charges.
Police say tips from the community were instrumental in tracking Adams down following the deadly shooting in the early morning hours Sunday.
Investigators say officers were called to a shopping center parking lot in the 6400 block of Marlboro Pike around 1:45 a.m. for a shooting. When the officers got there, they found a man shot inside a car. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Police later identified him as 26-year-old John Phipps of Waldorf.
Police say Adams fired the fatal shots because he was angry at the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro, which was apparently stolen, who allegedly spun their tires too close to Adams. So Adams opened fire at the Camaro, court documents say.
Phipps was sitting with a friend in his own car, which court documents say was positioned somewhere on the other side of the Camaro, and Phipps was struck by stray gunfire.
Transparency Notice: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the suspect (Adams) was upset with the victim (Phipps) for spinning his car's tires too close to him, but Phipps was not in that vehicle and was not involved in the events that led up to the shooting.
Another man was also shot, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening. His current condition is not known.
Court documents show the shooting was caught on cellphone video that was used by police to help identify Adams as the shooter.
Police have been searching for Adams since the shooting. Deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office took him into custody at his home in Virginia Wednesday morning. He is being held without bond awaiting extradition back to Prince George's County.
Court documents show Adams has been arrested multiple times for gun related crimes including this past January when police say he was found with a stolen gun in DC.
