DC man pleads guilty to attempted murder for shooting at Maryland-National Capital Park Police officer

Trevon Brox, 28, entered a guilty plea on Tuesday. He faces up to 50 years in prison.

OLNEY, Md. — A 28-year-old man pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder and use of a firearm for shooting at a Maryland National Capital Park Police officer

Trevon Brox, 28, entered the guilty plea on Tuesday. He faces up to 50 years in prison.

On Feb. 1, 2022, Maryland National Capital Park Police responded to a reported theft at the Olney Manor Swim Center. An employee told police that the suspect, later identified as Brox, had entered the locker room and was stealing from the lockers. The employee further advised officers that Brox was still on the scene.

The first officer to arrive on the scene was in an unmarked car and was not in uniform. He watched as Brox got into a car. At this time, that officer called for backup. Moments later, a Park Police cruiser arrived. When the marked police cruiser activated its emergency lights, Brox fled the scene, driving out of the parking lot onto Northbound Georgia Avenue at a high rate of speed.

He was spotted minutes later at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and King William Drive (a mile away from the swim center). There the officer watched as Brox's Hyundai collided with another occupied car that was stopped at a stop sign on King William Drive.

A witness told officers that after the Hyundai struck the second vehicle, Brox jumped out and went toward the trunk of the Hyundai. The witness then watched as Brox dropped and picked up his gun before fleeing into the neighborhood nearby.

The officer arrived in time to see Brox running into the neighborhood. By anticipating where he was going next, that officer was able to get in front of him. When asking for Brox to surrender, police say he pulled out a gun and shot at the officer who dove to the right to avoid the bullet.

Police say the bullet struck a car parked behind the officer.

Brox then turned and ran behind a row of townhomes. He was found and taken into custody shortly after the shooting.

A sentencing hearing for Brox is scheduled for Feb. 26.
