Man killed, 5 year old wounded after shooting at charity youth football game

Prince George's County Police say the shooting happened around 11:20 a.m. Saturday at Potomac High School's football field

OXON HILL, Md. — Police said an argument at a youth charity football game Saturday turned to gunfire at around 11:30 a.m.

They told WUSA9 one man opened fire on another, killing him and wounded a 5 year old who is being treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the suspect and man who was killed knew each other.

"What we don’t normally see is this level of violence, where a person produces a weapon, aims it, shoots it recklessly with children around, with adults around and kills another individual and injures a small person," said Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz.

Police said 30 to 40 people came to Potomac High School's football field Saturday morning to watch several teams of 7 year olds compete.

“This particular dispute today, one that years ago would have resulted in someone punching someone else in the nose, now because of the presence of guns and because of the easy access that too many people have to guns, becomes violent and tragic," said Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.

Investigators said they’re confident an arrest is imminent, but police are asking the suspect to make sure that happens as soon as possible.

"People who hear this or see this who know who did this today, that they talk to that individual or they tell us the name, because we’re going to find out, so that person turns themselves in right now," said Aziz.

"We will pursue this case vigorously," said Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy. "There is no excuse for what happened here today and through our prosecutions we will tell that story.”

Authorities tell WUSA9 this was not a school sponsored event, but a Maryland Parks and Planning sponsored fundraiser.

They also said security was present at Saturday’s games, but no police officers.
