MANASSAS, Va. — A man is speaking out, saying one of the people arrested in connection to a shooting outside Manassas Mall was already facing charges for allegedly shooting his grandson.
Steven Barbour says his grandson, Derrick Lewis, was shot in the neck by 18-year-old Daevon Russell on August 1, 2023.
“He put the gun up to my grandson and pulled the trigger. The bullet went in and out and hit his spine going out” Barbour claimed.
Barbour said Lewis and Russell knew each other but it’s still unclear what led up to the shooting. Russell is awaiting trial on four felony charges.
Lewis survived, but almost a year later, Barbour said his grandson is still recovering from the emotional and physical scars.
“My grandson is very depressed, just laying there, don’t go out. He still doesn’t have upper body strength yet.” Barbour said.
Adding to the pain, Prince William County Police have arrested Russell, along with two others, for a shooting outside Manassas Mall. The fight turned shooting between two groups left two people wounded.
Barbour told WUSA9 he is furious Russell was out of jail and allegedly in possession of a firearm, once again.
“How many kids could have gotten hurt? It’s a public mall. What kind of justice system do we got?” Barbour said.
Russell is still awaiting trial in Prince William County for last year’s charges.
Amy Ashworth, the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park told WUSA9 that during the Manassas Mall shooting, Russell was on Adult Pretrial Supervision. He was ordered to abstain from drugs and alcohol and submit to random testing for same and to have no contact with the victim of the crime.
Barbour hopes the judge will keep Russell behind bars this time. Russell's next court appearance is Friday.
