Man accused of breaking into woman's Virginia apartment, raping her arrested in Ohio

Residents of the apartment complex called on their management company, Bozzuto, to update security and provide better lighting following the crime.

ARLINGTON, Va. — A man suspected of breaking into a woman's apartment in Arlington and raping her has been arrested several states away.

Hamza Omar, 20, of Columbus, Ohio, faces a slew of charges for his role in the crime including rape, abduction with intent to defile, robbery, burglary with intent to commit rape, and wearing a mask in public.

He is currently being held in the Arlington County Detention Facility without bond.

During the course of the investigation, detectives collected and reviewed evidence and interviewed several witnesses. This led to the identification and arrest of Omar.

In August, warrants were obtained for his arrest. He was then found in Ohio, taken into custody by the Columbus Division of Police on the outstanding Arlington warrants and extradited to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Police say the break-in and subsequent rape occurred in late October of last year.

On Oct. 30, 2023, investigators say Omar somehow got into the Sedona Apartments on Clarendon Boulevard just after midnight.

Police say he was able to break into a woman's apartment and sexually assault her.

Arlington County Police explained that the man entered the bedroom, woke up the victim and threatened her. He then raped the victim before running away.

Bozzuto, who manages the property, sent an email to residents a day later regarding the crime and described it as a "private, isolated incident."

Several residents were upset they didn't hear more from management and called for updated security procedures inside the building and better lighting after the crime.

WUSA9 reached out to Bozzuto for comment but got no response.

This remains an active criminal investigation. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Detective McGuire at 703-228-4173 or tmcguire@arlingtonva.us.
