Arlington Police say attacker broke into woman's apartment, raped her

Residents of the Sedona Apartments say they want more information from management.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Over the weekend, as late Saturday night turned to early Sunday morning, Arlington County Police say a man somehow got inside the Sedona Apartments on Clarendon Boulevard just after midnight.

Police say he was able to break into a woman's apartment and sexually assault her.

Ashley Savage with Arlington County Police explained that the man entered the bedroom, woke up the victim and threatened her.

"The suspect then raped the victim before fleeing the scene on foot," said Savage.

Police say because it was dark out, they do not have a good description of the attacker.

"We're using a number of resources to actively investigate this incident, and we will conduct a thorough and complete investigation," said Savage. "But we need the community's assistance. If you saw anything suspicious in the area that night, please contact Arlington County Police."

"This is the first I'm hearing about it," said Winaly Simpson who lives at the Sedona Apartments. She and several residents of the apartment building say they would like to hear more from management.

In an online post, some say they did get an email a day later from the management company Bozzuto. But some took issue with how the incident was described as "...a private, isolated incident."

Police tell WUSA9 that investigators have not found any connection between the attacker and the victim.

"It's their duty to have said anything, at least an alarm," Simpson said about building management.

Others who live at the apartments tell WUSA9 they want updated security procedures inside the building and better lighting outside.

"It's insane that we haven't received any messaging at all," said Simpson who said she did not get an email from Bozzuto.

WUSA9 called and emailed management multiple times on Tuesday with no response. Meanwhile, police say the man behind this attack is still on the loose.
