Police investigate homicide, after finding human remains in Southwest, DC

The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who determined the cause of death was gunshot injuries.

WASHINGTON — DC Police are investigating a homicide in Southwest after human remains were found. 

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch responded to the 4300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue on Friday, for reports of human remains in a wooded area. 

When they arrived, officers located adult human remains in an advanced state of decomposition. The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who determined the cause of death was gunshot injuries. 

The victim was identified Monday as 29-year-old Leon Powell of Southeast, D.C.
