WASHINGTON — Police are working to determine how a man died when he was found with trauma wounds to the body in a Kennedy Center parking garage.

Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the 2700 block of F Street Northwest around 7:30 a.m. for an initial report of a shooting Chief Robert Contee III said police are still investigating exactly what happened.

Contee said arriving officers found a man dead with trauma to the body in the garage. DC Police said homicide detectives were on the scene conducting an investigation. There is no word yet on any potential suspects.

Contee said it's uncertain if the man was actually shot and how he arrived at the parking garage.

"It appears that he walked to the area near the parking garage entrance, but this does not appear to be where the crime actually occurred," Contee said.

Contee said investigators are reviewing video footage to work out exactly what happened. He said an employee for one of the Kennedy Center parking garages discovered the body and called police.

Southbound lanes of Rock Creek Parkway at Virginia Avenue are blocked due to police activity. Northbound lanes are blocked at Parkway Drive. Drivers are asked to follow police direction and expect delays in the area and use alternative routes if possible.

Contee is asking anyone who may have seen anything to contact them.

"If there's anyone who was in this area and saw something out of the ordinary in the area of Rock Creek Parkway near the Kennedy Center around 7:30 this morning, we're asking for you to give us a call," Contee said.

Anyone who may have information should call police at 202-727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.

Police have identified the victim in this case as 35-year-old Thomas Washington of Southeast, D.C.
