WASHINGTON — A man stabbed outside Audi Field on Saturday has died. Police have arrested and charged his alleged attacker.
Wali Shabazz, 49, is charged with second-degree murder while armed for his involvement in the death of Martin Gross, Jr., 41.
At 6:22 p.m. on April 27, police say a stabbing was reported in the 100 block of T Street, SW. At the scene, officers found Gross. This happened just an hour before the start of the D.C. United game.
Gross was then taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, DC Police said.
After an investigation, detectives revealed Shabazz and Gross "were known to each other, and the stabbing was a result of a workplace dispute."
According to court documents, multiple witnesses told investigators they saw two men fighting before one of the men stabbed the other repeatedly with a black handle knife, described as a straight dagger.
"[Witness] stated that [Shabazz] was "going to town" with the decedent," the court documents read. Another witness told police they heard one of the men say "We out of work now."
Shabazz was arrested after a witness pointed him out to officers who had just arrived at the scene of the crime.
Fans gathered for the game to see D.C. United face off against the Seattle Sounders, which was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. D.C United released a statement affirming the stabbing was an "isolated incident."
"D.C. United is aware of the incident that occurred outside of Audi Field tonight on the corner of 2nd Street and T Street SW.," the soccer club said on X, formerly called Twitter. "Emergency personnel from the Metropolitan Police Department DC FEMS swiftly responded to the incident as they were already on site supporting our match as usual. The victim was transported by D.C. Fire and EMS to a local hospital. This was an isolated incident, and the Metropolitan Police Department has advised that they have the suspect in custody. D.C. United is cooperating with the Metropolitan Police Department investigation. There is no ongoing threat to Audi Field or its guests, and the 7:30 p.m. game will kick off as scheduled."
