DC man gets 18 months for carjacking Uber driver after argument over pet

Detectives say 19-year-old Dax Franco Willis was charged with unarmed carjacking and robbery.

WASHINGTON — A 19-year-old man arrested for carjacking his Uber driver after getting into an argument over his dog was sentenced to 18 months behind bars on Friday.

Detectives say Dax Franco Willis of Northeast, D.C. assaulted the driver before stealing her car when she refused to allow his dog in the vehicle. He was charged with unarmed carjacking and robbery.

On the morning of Oct. 8, police say the rideshare driver picked up the accused carjacker identified as Willis in the 300 block of Eastern Avenue in Northeast. When Willis attempted to bring his dog into the rideshare driver's car, she told him that his dog was not allowed. This is when he threatened to spray her with mace.

Willis reportedly dragged her from the car, stole her phone, and fled the scene in the stolen vehicle, which was recovered later on Southern Avenue Southeast, near East Capitol Street Southeast.

Willis was arrested and charged a few days later after police shared images of Wallis inside the stolen car.

Willis was sentenced to three years in prison for the robbery charge, but the judge cut the sentence in half for time served. Following the prison sentence, Willis will serve three years of supervised release.
