Police search for the person responsible for killing a mother of 2 in a hit and run

Carla Mejia was studying Psychology in college and working hard to provide for her two daughters, ages 7 and 6.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Police said 27 year old Carla Mejia, known to family and friends as “Casey”, was killed after a driver struck her and fled the scene.

“I just want to confront them and ask them, What were they thinking? Were they intoxicated? What was the reason?” Adrian Mejia, Carla's brother said.

Police said Mejia was walking in the westbound lane of Minnieville Road and Bobcat Court in Woodbridge, VA just before midnight, wearing dark clothing.

Mejia’s brother, Adrian, told WUSA 9 she was wearing a black jacket and pants, but she was on the sidewalk.

“I don’t see how that would happen. She was on the sidewalk and the driver on the road. There are marks on the grass, you can see the driver swerved off the road. They made tire marks on the grass.” Mejia said.

Mejia was studying Psychology in college and working hard to provide for her two daughters, ages seven and six.

Adrian said, Mejia was the reason he enlisted in the U.S. Military.

“We were close. She was my motivation. She motivated me to join the Marine Corp. I’m stationed in Japan. We would try our best to communicate.”

A week after the incident, police tell WUSA 9 they are still looking for the driver. Police believe the vehicle is an unknown Hyundai vehicle.

Family is hopeful someone out there knows who killed Carla and will contact police.

“I really miss you and care for you." Adrian said. "She was my role model. She would light up the sky with her bright personality. I wish we could find who did this. I love you, I’m really going to miss you a lot.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses and to help with the two little girls Mejia leaves behind.
