Bank jugging on the rise in Bowie, police chief says

Preston describes the uptick as "disturbing" as the victims are often hardworking people from neighboring communities.

BOWIE, Md. — Bowie Police Chief Dwayne A. Preston released a statement Monday afternoon regarding an increase in people being robbed while leaving banks and other financial institutions.

Preston describes the uptick as "disturbing" as the victims are often hardworking people from neighboring communities. In each of the crimes, Preston says suspects targeted people leaving banks or other financial institutions, robbing them onsite.

"Over the last two weeks, we have experienced an increase in citizen robberies here in the City of Bowie," Preston's statement reads. "I find it disturbing that these offenses are being committed against our hardworking residents by individuals from neighboring communities."

These types of crimes are often referred to as bank jugging. One such instance happened earlier this month at a Truist Bank along Laurel-Bowie Road.

However, bank jugging is not exclusive to one area. In May, a man was robbed after withdrawing $10,000 from a bank in Springfield, Virginia.

"This is not only happening in Bowie," assured Preston. "This surging criminal activity has also become a significant issue for other jurisdictions around the region."

Preston says Bowie Police is working with other local law enforcement to share information to end what he describes as a "crime spree."

Bowie Police previously offered some tips to keep you from becoming a victim of bank jugging:

  1. Be aware of your surroundings outside of the bank.
  2. Store your cash in a discreet way, that means you should put it in your purse or wallet.
  3. Vary your routine and change your habits.
  4. Always lock your doors, close your windows and make sure all valuables are put away and lastly report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information may contact detectives at 240-544-5700 to report your concerns.
