PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — A teen is in police custody for allegedly making bomb threats at a Woodbridge high school.
On Tuesday, C.D. Hylton High School’s resource officer was notified via the BARK Alert system of a threat made against the school via email. Officials say a student emailed a staff member threatening to blow up the school.
During the investigation, the SRO was able to identify the student and determined the threats made were not credible and no one in the school was in any immediate danger.
BARK, the system that alerted the SRO, is used to monitor children’s online activities. One of its functions is to monitor a child's text, email, YouTube, and more than 30 apps and social media platforms. When issues of cyberbullying, adult content, sexual predators, profanity, suicidal ideation, threats of violence, and more arise, school officials are notified.
The teen is being charged with threats to bomb and is being held at a juvenile detention center. According to Virginia law, because the teen is 15 years old, the charge will be considered a Class 5 felony.
