WASHINGTON — Authorities have launched an investigation after an Amtrak employee confessed to lying to an FBI agent. Maurice Driver, 35, of Gloucester City, New Jersey plead guilty to one count of lying to a federal agent during an investigation into a sexual assault aboard the train.
According to court documents, Driver was an employee of Amtrak and was working as a lead service attendant in the cafe car on the train, which left Washington, D.C. on Jan. 3 and ended up in Chicago just two days later.
While working on the train, Driver met a passenger. After talking with the woman, he gave her his phone number and offered her a vacant sleeper car on the train. On Jan. 4, in Chicago, that passenger reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted by Driver while in her sleeper car on the train. An investigation into the sexual assault was then launched.
During an interview with authorities, Driver made multiple false and misleading statements. He denied ever giving the passenger his personal phone number, texting her, and that he showed her to a sleeper car. It was later determined these statements were untrue.
Driver is set to be sentenced on Nov. 6.
This case was investigated by the Amtrak OIG with assistance from the Amtrak Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rebecca G. Ross and Brian P. Kelly, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
