ACCOKEEK, Md. — Prince George's County Police are searching for the person(s) who opened fire during a vigil in a Prince George's County parking lot Thursday night, killing two men and injuring a third.
According to the Prince George's County Police Department, officers were called to the 7000 block of Berry Road just before midnight Thursday for the report of a shooting. Once on scene, officers discovered two men had been shot in the parking lot of the Manokeek Village Center. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Police have identified the men as Sheldon Proctor and Patrick Savoy.
A third man took himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound. He is said to be in stable condition.
Witnesses say the shooting happened during a vigil held following a car and motorcycle show. Attendees of the show say the family-friendly car exhibit is held weekly in the parking lot. They said it was not like other car meetups WUSA9 has reported on in the past, with people driving dangerously or doing donuts for show.
Proctor's family believes he was an innocent bystander.
"They wouldn't have a beef with him because he was such a good guy, and this senseless killing has got to stop," Proctor's sister, Tammala Swan, said.
Swan believes her brother was trying to get away from the violence when he was struck and killed.
The Proctor family said Sheldon was paralyzed from the waist down following a dirt biking accident. His father, William 'Buck' Proctor told reporters the accident did not stop his son's passion for cars and motorcycles.
"I thought it was bad enough my wife and mother leave me a month a half a apart, and now Sheldon is gone," the mourning father said.
Buck Proctor said he was suppossed to be going to the racetrack with his son Friday, but instead found himself picking up Sheldon's van and scooter from a crime scene. He hopes those responsible for his son's death will turn themselves in.
"He loved the world. He loved everybody," Swan said of her brother.
Savoy's family described Patrick as a fun-loving family man who loved to dance. They say the vigil was for his cousin who had died a few days before.
Police do not yet know a motive for the shooting. They are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Prince George's County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS. The police department is offering a $25,000 reward for the tip that leads to an arrest and indictment in this case.
