Creating safe spaces for youth: New foster care house opens in Northeast

The goal of the Jonathan & Hannah Allen House is to be more than just a shelter, but rather an oasis and sanctuary, where youth can feel at home.

WASHINGTON — On Friday, The Jonathan & Hannah Allen House opened its doors to the public. The house is a therapeutic group home for youth in foster care.

The home is located at 715 55th Street, Northeast Washington D.C., and is named in honor of Washington Commanders defensive lineman Jonathan Allen and his wife.

Allen began this passion project having navigated the foster care system himself. He understands the cold and unwelcoming nature that some youth experience in the system. His own personal journey fuels his passion for creating spaces and opportunities for the youth of this community.

Since joining the Commanders in 2019, Allen has been a part of Sasha Bruce Youthwork. The goal of the Jonathan & Hannah Allen House is to be more than just shelter, but rather an oasis and sanctuary, where youth can feel at home.

The Allen House provides:

  • Therapeutic Group Home Model: 24/7 support, group and individual therapy, and skill-building workshops to address emotional, behavioral, and social needs.
  • Creative Expression & Exploration
  • Facial Bar: Sponsored by Silver Mirror Facial Bar, self-care workshops and career exploration opportunities in the beauty industry.
  • Hauptman Family Innovation Lounge & Creative Studio: equipped with gaming consoles, a music studio, and career exploration resources.
