Fundraiser started for families of 10-year-old boy, 5-year-old girl hit, killed outside Maryland elementary school

Felix Martinez, a former Riverdale Park police officer, assembled the fundraiser.

RIVERDALE, Md. — A local community member is fundraising for the families of the two Riverdale Elementary School students who died on Nov. 20 after being hit by a car while walking to school.

Felix Martinez, a former Riverdale Park police officer and the CEO and founder of Ameliorating Justice Consulting LLC, a consulting firm aiming to bridge the gap between law enforcement agencies and communities, organized the GoFundMe campaign.

"In collaboration with the dedicated Riverdale Elementary staff, we are working tirelessly to provide unwavering support to these grieving families," Martinez wrote on the GoFundMe page.

Sky Sosa and Shalom Mbah were crossing the street in a crosswalk on their way to school when they were struck by a car on the morning of Nov. 20. The kids were taken to nearby hospital with critical injuries, and shortly after, police announced the kids had died.

The donations will be divided equally between the families, according to the post. As of Saturday afternoon, the campaign raised $39,225 of its $20,000 goal.

A vigil was also held Saturday night for the two children.

"Funerals are emotionally challenging and financially burdensome, and your generous contribution will directly impact the Sosa and Mbah families, helping them cover the costs associated with laying their precious children to rest," Martinez wrote online.
