WASHINGTON — Hidden behind Kelly Miller Middle School in Northeast, D.C. is a grassroots organization hub.
Dreaming Out Loud is sowing the seeds of positive change through innovative urban farming. Christopher Bradshaw, the founder and executive director of Dreaming Out Loud, spoke with WUSA9 about how the organization nurtures communities, fosters sustainability, and addresses vital food access issues.
The nonprofit is aiming to combat food insecurity, specifically in Wards 7 and 8, where there is limited access to fresh, nutritious produce.
“There's only three grocery stores for more than 170,000 people east of the river here in Washington, D.C.,” Bradshaw said.
Dreaming Out Loud provides fresh food through their online grocery store and a farmers market in front of Kelly Miller Middle School every Saturday. It also offers community-based programming and training events. The nonprofit often hosts youth and teaches them how to garden and plant, for example.
The organization collaborates with Kelly Miller Middle School and other organizations, including the local nonprofit City Blossoms.
Bradshaw's goals are to connect generations, educate community members, and build a just food system.
